Should I feed my dogs popular German sausage – bratwurst?

No, dogs cannot eat bratwurst. They’re not good for dogs due to the ingredients from which they’re made. Prolonged feeding can also lead to obesity which would result in joint pain, cardiac problems, lack of activity and energy which would overall result in shortening the lifespan of your dog. In some cases, it can even cause pancreatitis which is a very severe condition.

The amount of salt in bratwurst is high when comparing it to a dog. It can lead to salt poisoning in dogs and gastrointestinal problems like diarrhea, excessive urination, thirst, vomiting etc. They can also contain ingredients like sauerkraut, onion, mustard, catsup and garlic as toppings which are toxic to dogs and can lead to various health issues. The fermented food like sauerkraut used in bratwurst is bad for your dog’s stomach, your dog’s stomach isn’t adapted to fermented foods like humans.

Apart from that, a lot of spices are also used which may be unfamiliar and potentially harmful for your dog.

What are the symptoms my dog can have after eating bratwurst?

The dogs may suffer various symptoms due to the different ingredients present in bratwurst that are harmful to the dog’s health. The most common symptoms are gastroenteritis, Diarrhea, Nausea, Vomiting, excessive urination, loss of appetite, Upset stomach, Lethargy, thirst, and abdominal pain. There can be many reasons due to which these symptoms are happening for example it can be a minor reaction to the fatty pork meat or a severe pancreatitis attack.

What should I do if my dog accidentally ate bratwurst?

The symptoms would vary depending upon factors like your dog’s size, breed, previous medical conditions etc, and the amount of bratwurst eaten. Generally, for a medium or big-size dog, a small bite without any seasoning wouldn’t do much harm. But in case you observe bad symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, excessive urination etc, get the help of your veterinarian as soon as possible.
