Is it safe for dogs to eat hummus?

No, it is not at all advised for dogs to eat hummus as it is not fit for dogs. Your dogs may suffer from various illnesses and sometimes there are life-threatening cases too. There are a lot of food items which both humans and dogs can eat, but hummus is not one of them.

It is a treat to taste buds due to the various spicy and flavourful ingredients involved in the making of it. The first ingredient is Chickpeas which acts as a somewhat neutral base and other ingredients which give it that spiciness and flavour are olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, tahini, etc. It has various minerals and vitamins stored in it for you like folate, dietary fiber, iron, protein, vitamin B, manganese, phosphorus, etc.

Why should dogs not eat hummus?

The main ingredient that hummus contains is chickpeas which are not injurious to the health of your dog; rather it is healthy. But the other ingredients like salt, olive oil, tahini, and most dangerous of all garlic and lemon juice can severely affect the health of your dog.

How Garlic and Lemon juice present in Hummus affect dogs health?

Garlic can cause garlic poisoning in dogs. The red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygenated blood to different parts of the dog’s body and garlic destroys red blood cells of dogs leading to a lesser number of red blood cells due to which oxygenation process is hampered and dogs may suffer illnesses like anaemia. Anaemia can grow to a larger scale leading to fatal injuries like organ damage/ failure or in some cases death too.

Lemon juice on the other hand has a low PH. due to which it is acidic in nature for dogs. Dogs may suffer from abdominal pain and discomfort due to lemon juice.

What should you do if your dog has eaten Hummus?

It all depends on the quantity of hummus the dog has ingested. If it’s in low quantity then there are chances that the dog may suffer from mild symptoms and it’s not life-threatening.

But if it’s in large quantities you should get medical help as soon as possible because the poisonous ingredients i.e. garlic and lemon juice will create toxicity in your dogs’ body which will cause various other complications. It may even be life-threatening in some cases.

If your Dog eats hummus he/ she may suffer various illnesses and discomfort. In the initial days, you may not observe a lot of changes or no changes at all, but the effect of toxic substances for dogs like garlic can be seen after days. The symptoms that your dogs can suffer from if a small quantity of hummus is consumed are drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, etc. If the hummus consumed is in large quantities the effects can be severe and the dog may get really sick, in which case you should get medical help as soon as possible. But in most cases, the amount of garlic or lemon juice consumed is not too much that it’ll cause severe issues for your dog.

Hummus is a delicious spicy meal that we all enjoy but unfortunately dogs can’t enjoy that with us. So we should avoid giving hummus to our dogs. If you want you can feed them raw chickpeas that are good for their health or make a recipe that would not include all those harmful ingredients for your dog. But for hummus, it’s a big No.
