Are dogs allowed bagels?
No, you should not give bagels to your dog. There are some varieties which can be given to your dog, but only a piece. No variety can be beneficial enough to be eaten in full quantity. Bagels contain gluten and carbohydrates which are not healthy for a dog to eat. If your dog eats bagels on daily basis then he might suffer from a condition like bloat, in some cases they will develop a habit which can be very difficult to break.

It can rapidly increase the weight of your dog and can make him obese, which will make him sluggish and his overall health will be affected. There are some variety of bagels that are not good for dogs at all, for example onion bagels, these contain onions which are toxic for dogs, some bagels consist of ingredients such as garlic, poppy seeds etc. which cannot be given to dogs in any condition.
What kind of toppings on bagels is bad for dogs?
We usually don’t eat plain bagels, we add butter, jam, cream, cheese etc. to make it tastier, these topping can be okay for us to eat but they are not for dogs. Ingredients like cream, cheese, butter etc. are high in fats and are not good for health of dogs. There are some variety of bagels that are said to be ‘unsweetened variety’, even those contains sweeteners that are harmful / toxic for dogs.
What to do if your dog asks to eat bagels?
If you are eating a bagel, it can be very convenient for you to toss a piece towards your dog, but you have to look at the bigger picture. Your dog might ask to eat bagels, but they are extremely unhealthy for them. If you’ve already introduced bagels to your dog, you should not continue to give bagels to your dog. You can try to give your dog different alternatives like, carrot, bananas, cantaloupe, yogurt, eggs etc.
What dog breeds are extremely sensitive towards eating bagels?
Bagels are unhealthy to all dog breeds, but there are some, which are extremely sensitive towards it:
- German Shepherd
- Boxer
- Bulldogs
- Beagle
- Labrador
They are not allergic to some specific bagel ingredients, but they are prone to overweight / obesity, therefore any food that contains high amount of fats and carbohydrates are not good for them to eat.
How can you know if your dog is having an allergic reaction?
Dogs can’t have allergy from a plain bagel, but can have an allergic reaction from some toppings or other different variety of bagels. If your dog ate non-plain bagels, then you should see if there are any symptoms that show he is having a reaction. Most common symptoms are: Diarrhea, excessive feet licking, ear inflammation, other gastro-intestinal issues.
Hence, we can conclude that giving bagels to your dog is a bad idea. Bagels should never be added to the diet of your dog as it will only cause trouble and make him prone to many diseases.
